Expert summary
Astronomy is an area of scientific study which focuses on the study of celestial objects – anything outside of Earth. As a science, astronomy has been practiced for thousands of years. However, many of the advances within astronomy have corresponded to advances in observational technology as well as mathematics. The first telescopes were invented at the beginning of the 17th century and each technological advance since then has allowed astronomers to measure and monitor celestial phenomena more precisely. Later the invention of computers resulted in the development of a theoretical branch that focuses on creating computer models that describe celestial phenomena.
